Mortgage rates continue to hover above recent lows set earlier this past week. Mortgage rates dropped over the past several weeks following bond yields lower. Disappointing economic numbers released, including poor housing numbers and employment numbers, drove mortgage rates lower. On Friday a disappointing consumer sentiment survey was released sending bond yields and mortgage rates down further.

The University of Michigan/Reuters sentiment index fell to a reading of 66.5 for July from 76 in June. Economists surveyed by Market Watch had expected a July reading of 74.3. CPI numbers were also released on Friday showing a decline of 0.1 percent in June.

Adding to the down pressure on mortgage rates was the recent release of the FOMC's monetary policy minutes showing the fed believes the economy is slowing down and inflation still isn't a concern. With low inflation or even deflation the fed won't be inclined to raise interest rates.

30 year mortgage rates are averaging 4.72 percent this week, up from the previous week’s average 30 year mortgage rate of 4.67 percent. Current 30 year refinance mortgage rates are also averaging 4.67 percent this week.

15 year mortgage rates currently are averaging 4.21 percent this week, an increase from last week’s average 15 year mortgage interest rate of 4.18 percent. 15 year mortgage refinance rates currently are also are higher averaging 4.21 percent this week.
