Average savings account rates for today, July 8, 2012, haven't moved much. Current average savings rates/money market rates for account balances of $10,000 are at 0.53 percent. This is the average rate there are many banks currently offering higher savings account rates on our savings rate lists.

For instance, Barclays Bank has the current U.S. savings rate at 1.00 percent with an APY of 1.00 percent. Barclays Bank savings rates have been in the top 5 of our list since the bank started offering savings accounts in the U.S. a couple of months ago.

The current average savings rate/money market rate for account balances of $25,000 is at 0.66 percent. Right now on our rate table CIT Bank is offering their online savings account rate at 1.04 percent with an APY of 1.05 percent. The minimum opening deposit for a CIT Bank savings account is $25,000.

One bank on our rate table is offering a 6 month month promotional money market account rate of 1.24 percent with an APY of 1.25 percent. The bank, EverBank recently raised their 6 month promo money market rate. The overall first year APY on the account is 1.01 percent.

Other banks offering savings rates above the current national average on our rate list include American Express Bank, Ally Bank and Discover Bank. Current savings rates on American Express Bank's online savings account are at 0.85 percent with an APY of 0.85 percent. Amex also recently increased the rate it pays on it's online savings account.

Current Ally Bank savings rates are at 0.84 percent with an APY of 0.84 percent. Discover Bank savings account rates are slightly below at 0.80 percent with an APY of 0.80 percent.
