30 year mortgage refinance rates were slightly this week over last. The current average 30 year mortgage refinance rate is down to 5.03 percent this week, down from the prior week's average refinance mortgage rate of 5.07 percent. 30 year refinance rates have been heading down the past couple of weeks after running up early in April when the Fed completed its purchases of mortgage-backed securities (MBS).
Homeowners that are not underwater on their mortgages and have enough equity to refinance their loan are doing so thanks to record low mortgage rates today. In the Weekly Application Survey released by the Mortgage Bankers Association, refinance applications are up 5.6 percent from the prior week.
Fixed mortgage rates are mixed and home purchase applications increased to the highest level in 2011 in the latest mortgage survey released this morning. In the Mortgage Bankers Association's Weekly Mortgage Application Survey, the average 30 year mortgage rate increased to 4.93 percent with 0.87 mortgage discount points for the week ending March 4, 2011. The previous week's survey saw 30 year mortgage rates averaging 4.84 percent with mortgage discount points averaging 1.29 percent.
