FDIC List of Troubled Banks and the Texas Ratio

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains a list of problem banks that isn't published or shared with anyone else. So how can the average depositor or lender know if their bank is a problem bank about to fail?

The Texas Ratio is one measure that might offer a clue. The ratio was developed by RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy in the 1980's to forecast which banks could fail during the 1980's real estate bubble...Deja vu, anyone?

The ratio is devised by comparing a bank's troubled loans to its capital. If the amount of bad loans equals or exceeds its capital, a ratio of 100% or higher, the bank might not have enough capital to cover its losses related to the bad loans on its books. Updated Failed Bank List Below:

mortgage-rates-long-term-mortgage-rates-still-below-500-freddie-macToday's mortgage interest rates are still below 5.00 percent in the latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey released by Freddie Mac. 30-year mortgage rates increased to 4.94 percent for the week ending December 17, 2009. 30-year loan rates are almost where they were last year at this time, 30-year rates were at 5.19 percent.  In last week's mortgage survey 30 year rates were at 4.81 percent.
home-equity-loan-vs-home-equity-line-of-creditDuring the housing boom we saw several years ago, homeowners used the equity in their homes as a piggy bank. The credit crunch, the downturn in housing prices, and the recession turned the equity loan spigot off for many. As a result, banks lowered available credit in home equity lines of credit and sometimes closed HELOC accounts if no money was owed.
