FDIC List of Troubled Banks and the Texas Ratio

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains a list of problem banks that isn't published or shared with anyone else. So how can the average depositor or lender know if their bank is a problem bank about to fail?

The Texas Ratio is one measure that might offer a clue. The ratio was developed by RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy in the 1980's to forecast which banks could fail during the 1980's real estate bubble...Deja vu, anyone?

The ratio is devised by comparing a bank's troubled loans to its capital. If the amount of bad loans equals or exceeds its capital, a ratio of 100% or higher, the bank might not have enough capital to cover its losses related to the bad loans on its books. Updated Failed Bank List Below:

This week's CD rate changes were numerous because banks and credit unions increased interest rates across the board. The high number of CD rate changes this past week is a result of the Federal Reserve increasing the fed funds rate. The recent fed funds rate increase of 25 basis points put the fed funds rate in a range of 1.50 percent to 1.75 percent.
5 Star Bank 1 Year CD rates are now at 0.85 percent with a yield of 0.85 percent. View current 1 Year CD rates at 5 Star Bank below.
Mortgage rates just hit a new low for 2017 on the heels of lower bond yields. Average 30 year mortgage rates are lower this week to 3.69 percent, down from last week's average rate of 3.75 percent. 10 year bond yields fell to 2.13 percent, putting downward pressure on mortgage rates.
