FDIC List of Troubled Banks and the Texas Ratio

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains a list of problem banks that isn't published or shared with anyone else. So how can the average depositor or lender know if their bank is a problem bank about to fail?

The Texas Ratio is one measure that might offer a clue. The ratio was developed by RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy in the 1980's to forecast which banks could fail during the 1980's real estate bubble...Deja vu, anyone?

The ratio is devised by comparing a bank's troubled loans to its capital. If the amount of bad loans equals or exceeds its capital, a ratio of 100% or higher, the bank might not have enough capital to cover its losses related to the bad loans on its books. Updated Failed Bank List Below:

mortgage-rates-mixedMortgage rates were mixed this week, according to Freddie Mac's weekly survey. The average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 4.86 percent with an average 0.6 point, up from last week when it averaged 4.84 percent. Still a lot lower than last year's average of 6.01 percent thanks to the recession and the government programs designed to lower mortgage rates.
current-mortgage-rates-higher-30-year-mortgage-rates-at-496-15-year-mortgage-rates-at-433Current mortgage rates were slightly higher in this week's mortgage survey with the exception of 1 year adjustable mortgage rates which were down 10 basis points to 4.22 percent. 30 year mortgage rates averaged 4.96 percent for the week ending March 18, 2010 in the current Primary Mortgage Market Survey released by Freddie Mac. Average mortgage discount points on 30 year mortgages remained unchanged at 0.7 points.
