FDIC List of Troubled Banks and the Texas Ratio

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains a list of problem banks that isn't published or shared with anyone else. So how can the average depositor or lender know if their bank is a problem bank about to fail?

The Texas Ratio is one measure that might offer a clue. The ratio was developed by RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy in the 1980's to forecast which banks could fail during the 1980's real estate bubble...Deja vu, anyone?

The ratio is devised by comparing a bank's troubled loans to its capital. If the amount of bad loans equals or exceeds its capital, a ratio of 100% or higher, the bank might not have enough capital to cover its losses related to the bad loans on its books. Updated Failed Bank List Below:

Home mortgage rates are higher again this week in the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Weekly Applications Survey. The average contract mortgage rate on 30 year home mortgages increased to 4.66 percent for the week ending December 3, 2010, up from the previous week’s average 30 year mortgage rate of 4.56 percent. 30 year mortgage rates have increased for the fourth consecutive week and haven’t been higher in the survey since July, 2010. Average mortgage discount points on 30 year home mortgage loans decreased to 0.95 points, down from the prior week’s average of 0.95 points.
Long term conforming mortgage rates and long term jumbo mortgage rates all headed lower this morning. 15 year jumbo home mortgage rates had the biggest decline. 15 year jumbo loans are down 23 basis points since yesterday.
