CD Rates for December 24th, 2019

CD Rates for December 24th, 2019Average CD rates for December 24th, 2019 are mostly lower compared to last week's average rates. All average CD rates declined, except for average 3-month CD rates, which were unchanged. The best CD rates available on our rate lists are also lower, except for 6-month CD rates which moved higher. We don't expect any big moves either way for CD rates in the coming months, unless the Federal Reserve increases or lowers the fed funds rate which is unlikely. What's more likely to happen in 2020 is for CD rates to continue their slow decline. Slowly declining CD rates are unfortunate because CD rates never got above their pre-Financial Crisis level of more than a decade ago. If there is a recession in 2020, we might see the highest 12-month CD rates available fall towards 1.00 percent.BMO Harris Bank CD rates on 6-month certificates of deposit are the best deal available on our rate list. Current 6-month CD rates at BMO Harris Bank are at 1.89 percent with an APY of 1.90 percent. That rate is higher than many 12-month CD rates available today. Overall, Ally Bank is one bank that stands out with competitive CD rates on all CD terms. You can compare online CD rates with Ally Bank CD rates to get the best deal on a certificate of deposit.     Read more...

As we predicted in early March, the the top 1 year CD rate currently available is now at 1.49 percent with a yield of 1.50 percent. Conexus Credit Union is the first financial institution in the rate database to increase their 1 year rate to the 1.50 percent level.

The catalyst for sending the best 1 year CD rates to 1.50 percent APY was the Federal Open Market Committee increasing the fed funds rate on March 15th. On March 8th, we wrote a post reporting that the coming fed funds rate increase will likely force the top 1 year CD rate to 1.50 percent. You can read the post at Fed Will Push Top 1 Year CD Rates Above 1.50%.

It will be interesting to see if the top online banks that usually compete to have the best rate will also increase their rate to 1.50 percent or possibly higher. There are several banks very close to the 1.50 percent level. Banesco USA has 1 year rates at 1.45 percent, PurePoint Financial, My e-BAnC by BAC Florida Bank and Live Oak Bank are all offering 1 year rates at 1.40 percent.

Astoria Bank Increases Intermediate and Long Term CD Rates

Astoria Bank CD rates were recently increased on the bank's intermediate and long term certificates of deposit. This change is counter to what most banks are doing these days. Many banks are increasing their short term CD rates because short term bond yields are moving higher while intermediate and long term yields remain flat.

CD rates at Astoria Bank were increased on two, three, and four year certificates of deposit. The largest increase was on three year certificates of deposit. Three year CD rates were increased from 1.04 percent with a yield of 1.05 percent to 1.24 percent with a yield of 1.25 percent.

The 20 basis point increase moved Astoria Bank from 20th place to 15th place on our 3 year rate list. The best three year CD rate in our database is 30 basis points higher at 1.54 percent with a yield of 1.55 percent. Live Oak Bank currently has the best three year rate.

9 CD Rates Increased - 8 CD Rates Decreased in June

Banks and credit unions have been all over the place with their rates. In our database of CD rates, there were 9 CD rate increases and 8 CD rate decreases in June. Average CD rates on 2 year, 3 year and 5 year certificates of deposit moved slightly higher while 3 month and 6 month rates were unchanged. The biggest decrease the past month was from Chartway Federal Credit Union. CFCU's 6 month rate was lowered from 0.85 percent to 0.70 percent. The largest increase was from Synchrony Bank. The bank's 2 year CD rate was increased from 1.15 percent to 1.25 percent.CD Rates will remain near current levels until the Federal Open Market Committee increases the federal funds rate. Most Fed watchers anticipate an increase during the FOMC's September meeting. The amount of the increase will probably be 0.25 percent, which will send the best CD rates in our database up by the same amount.     Read more...

CD Rate Report June 2, 2015: Best 6 Month CD Rate at 1.00 Percent

A couple of banks increased their CD rates this past week. California First National Bank increased their 6 month CD rate from 0.85 percent to 0.95 percent, putting them in second place in our 6 month rate database. CIT Bank increased their 2 year CD rate from 1.35 percent to 1.40 percent. These increases were small and we won't see any major increases in deposit rates until the Federal Open Market Committee increases their key benchmark interest rate. There is a slight chance the FOMC might increase the rate during their June meeting (June 16th and 17th).If a rate increase doesn't happen this month, July will be the next target for an increase. The FOMC will meet again on July 28th and July 29th to discuss monetary policy. May and June's employment reports will be driving factors on whether or not the rate is increased.     Read more...

Bank CD Rates Report May 21, 2015

Another quiet week for CD rates, no big change in rates for short term or long term certificate of deposits. We don't expect any major changes in CD rates until the Federal Open Market Committee meets next month. If the FOMC does increase the federal funds rate, banks will follow with higher deposit rates. The best CD rate deal in our rate database is MyCBB Bank's 2 month CD rate at 0.80 percent. Investing in short term certificates of deposit right now makes sense because rates are moving higher this year. MyCBB Bank's rate is also higher than all 3 month rates in the database and better than most 6 month rates.Colorado Federal Savings Bank increased their CD rates and the bank is now listed in most of the rate lists below. Capital One Bank also increased their rates and made some of the lists. California First National Bank increased their 6 month rate from 0.85 percent to 0.95 percent. EverBank made small increases to their rates, a couple basis points higher. Discover Bank lowered their 5 year CD rate 10 basis points.     Read more...
