This past week brought more CD rate changes that were once again positive. Five different banks changed CD Rates on 24 certificate of deposit terms and all the increases were higher. Over the past year, the best 1 year CD rates have just about doubled in price to around 2.50 percent.We anticipate banks increasing CD rates even more this year and next. CD rates are moving higher because the Federal Reserve is putting upward pressure on rates by increasing the federal funds rate. The Fed is widely expected to increase the rate again during their upcoming September meeting, according to the CME's FedWatch Tool.Another 25 basis point increase in September would put the fed funds rate in a targeted range of 2.00 percent to 2.25 percent. This week's CD rate changes were numerous because banks and credit unions increased interest rates across the board. The high number of CD rate changes this past week is a result of the Federal Reserve increasing the fed funds rate. The recent fed funds rate increase of 25 basis points put the fed funds rate in a range of 1.50 percent to 1.75 percent.Since that increase, we have new highs on 3 month, 6 month and 1 year CD rates. The best 3 month CD rate increased to 1.56 percent, up from 1.45 percent. The best 6 month CD rates are now at 2.00 percent, up from 1.85 percent.It's nice to write about CD rates making new highs, especially after writing for years about rates making new lows. Just over a month ago we were writing about 1 year CD rates hitting two percent. Now 6 month CD rates at two percent. Hopefully, by the end of the year, 3 month rates will reach 2.00 percent. The highest CD rates continue to move higher as online banks increase rates again this week. 10 different online banks and credit unions increased a slew of CD rates over the past seven days. Rates on both short term and long term certificates of deposits moved higher.The biggest increases again this week were on shorter term certificates of deposit. This is because the Federal Reserve is driving short term rates higher. The Fed is scheduled to meet in the middle of next month and is widely expected to increase rates again.
We just reached a new milestone for 12 Month CD rates in 2017 as rates continue to inch higher. Crestmark Bank is now offering 12 Month CD rates at 1.80 percent. Just about two months ago, we reported a new high for 1 year CD rates at 1.70 percent. That new high was also from CrestMark Bank. The Federal Open Market Committee meets this month and will more than likely increase the fed funds rate by 25 basis points.Another fed funds rate increase will put additional upward pressure on short term interest rates. 1 year CD rates could therefore hit 1.90 percent this month and 2.00 percent sometime early in 2018. We expect the increase in rates to continue next month and into 2018. The Fed is widely expected to increase the rate during their meeting in December. In fact, the CME Group's FedWatch Tool puts the probability of an increase at 91.5 percent, as of this writing.The current fed funds rate is in a range of 1.00 percent to 1.25 percent. An increase in December will put the rate between 1.25 percent and 1.50 percent. The last time the rate was that high was nearly a decade ago. New credit card rules take effect this week that were passed in the Credit Card Holders Bill of Rights this past spring. The biggest credit card change is starting on August 20, 2009, credit card companies will have to give consumers 45 days notice before raising their credit card interest rate. You have the option to turn down the new credit card rate but if you do be prepared to payoff the balance. Which you could have done in the past before this new credit card rule takes effect.
30 year mortgage rates are down to 4.82 percent in the latest Mortgage Application Survey released by the Mortgage Bankers Association. This is a slight decline from last week’s average 30 year contract mortgage rate of 4.83 percent.
