are-some-bank-cd-rates-riskyBelieve it or not there is a fight brewing over CD Rates. The American Bankers Association's (ABA) President & CEO, Edward Yingling, sent a letter to the FDIC's Chairwoman, Sheila Bair, basically saying the FDIC needs to do it's job and stop Ally Bank (formally GMAC Bank) from offering some of the highest CD rates in the nation. Bank CD rates which are more than double the national average for some CD deposits
Over the past ten years online banks have become more mainstream and usually offer higher CD rates on average than traditional brick and mortar banks. Granted the higher CD interest rates you can get at online banks are minimal these days since all deposit rates are very low but every basis point counts towards a higher return!
Initial jobless claims dropped more than expected, another hopeful sign that the labor market is indeed getting better and we might see higher CD rates sooner than expected. Higher CD rates depend on the Federal Open Market Committee increasing their key interest rate, the federal funds rate.
