FDIC List of Troubled Banks and the Texas Ratio

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) maintains a list of problem banks that isn't published or shared with anyone else. So how can the average depositor or lender know if their bank is a problem bank about to fail?

The Texas Ratio is one measure that might offer a clue. The ratio was developed by RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy in the 1980's to forecast which banks could fail during the 1980's real estate bubble...Deja vu, anyone?

The ratio is devised by comparing a bank's troubled loans to its capital. If the amount of bad loans equals or exceeds its capital, a ratio of 100% or higher, the bank might not have enough capital to cover its losses related to the bad loans on its books. Updated Failed Bank List Below:

record-low-mortgage-rates-on-five-year-armMortgage rates on 5-year adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) reached another low this week. Mortgage rates on five-year ARMs were 4.80 percent with an average 0.6 point, down from last week when rates were 4.85 percent.
You're probably have seen the headlines about record low mortgage rates and refinance rates. You might also be looking into refinancing. The loan of choice for most homeowners is 30 year loans but you should also consider a 15 year loan.
Mortgage rates on 30 year conventional home loans hit a new low for 2014. Average 30 year mortgage rates are currently at 4.18 percent, a decline from last week's average 30 year mortgage rate of 4.22 percent. Mortgage rates are lower this year because long term bond rates have fallen. 10 year bond yields were just over 3.00 percent in early January and are now at 2.50 percent.
